Treme would be a whole lot less boring if it were just an Anthony Bourdain cooking show with very high production values.

What's all this hate for Treme? I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I thought it had great moments, but lacked the thematic clarity and plot-driven narrative many of us Simon fans now expect.
In my anecdotal experience, Simon fans (myself included) felt the first season of The Wire to be slow, lackluster, boring, or some combination thereof. Sometimes a little patience is needed for characters for find their place. Even if the first season of Treme wasn't a long music video for stellar Nola tunes, it's still fantastic television.
I think they should just punch up season two by bringing in ringers from other HBO series. They could do it really naturally by having one of the characters be like "Hey, who's that new guy in town? Why it's the loveable highwayman Omar, and his friend Sherrif Bullock from Deadwood and that very tall blond vampire from the vampire show! They look like they've got something to say." Hilarious! Great idea. I think part of the problem is a lot of people -- myself included -- watched 'The Wire' on DVD, meaning we could just go to the next episode. I found the first season quite suspenseful. There was a plot -- "we're going to take down the gang" -- and I was hooked!
