DC to Obama: Back the hell off

Yeah. You heard me.

You don't have the right to waltz in here and, within eight days of taking the office, talk shit about our winters.

Now comes Barack Obama, newly arrived from Chicago. And I should emphasize that I am most happy to see him and his family here. I welcome them. But after decades of listening to my friend Mike Wilbon, a native Chicagoan, tell me what wimps we are in Washington, I suppose I should have been prepared for President Obama's Chicago bravado. Commander in chief for eight days, he steps right up and pokes fun because Washington-area schools are closed for "some ice." Then he offers this: "When it comes to the weather, folks in Washington don't seem to be able to handle things."

  • Funny story. I think President Obama will handle the heat and humidity of DC just fine, since Chicago's awful in the summer. The smart move for government would be to move the White House and government to Los Angeles.

  • The many pages of posted comments in reaction to McManus' piece, which is at its core clearly humorously intended, are kind of funny. But Obama is right. Being from DC but having gone to college in Madison, WI, I can say with all certainty that Washingtonians don't get enough snow nor cold enough weather to know how to handle it when it actually does come. Weather-wise, DCers are much more noteworthy for their tolerance of the summer heat. That and their unearthly tolerance for Cluck-U Chicken's 911 sauce.
