Oh, so that's how NOT to do music criticism

A whole interview with Marnie Stern and, hmm, nothing about her music. Interesting...

MS: We got along so well with them on tour, it was so sad when we had to leave them. We keep texting "we miss you!" to each other.Pitchfork: Awwww.MS: I know? Isn't that nicePitchfork: It is nice, it was a good fit. I saw you guys in Chicago, it was a very good show.MS: It was so fun playing with them and hanging out with them every night. Ohhhh,  bummer. But we've got those two shows in New York, so it'll be a reunion.Pitchfork: That's good. Hometown gigs.

Wow. That's really interesting. I can really tell you care. Go on.

  • When tapes of Nixon and Kissinger talking are more hip and interesting than your indie rock music interview, you should probably lay off.

  • Online indie music interviews are a cliche ridden mine field. You have got to know what you are doing in order to make it work, but an artist that is willing to give a little helps, as does some luck. I've found that the amount of depth behind the music is often in direct correlation to the "interest level" of the interview. Also, young artist often don't have that much to say. If they do, it usually ends up being all braggadocio, hype, or personal stories really unrelated to their music. This is an interesting topic--interviews in digital media--and I could go on, and on about it...but I won't. Do more interviews Splice!
