Most of the current politics have focused on the ideological chasm that exists between the ascendant Democratic Socialists and the entrenched Democratic Establishment, the split in MAGA over the Iran War; perceived neglect of President Trump’s America First agenda is less apparent, but real.
Exploring how these intra-party schisms might play out in November provides a glimpse of a tumultuous political landscape. On the right, a staunch Trump base that wholeheartedly supports the Iran incursion can be relied upon. Butting heads mathematically will be disgruntled Republicans who stay home in protest of endless Mideast war and those who, despite misgivings about the Iran mission, turn out to buck the tide of the Democrat Socialists. Some, who until last February would’ve supported Trump, have likely peeled away, less enthusiastic as America risks being bogged down in the kind of Iraq-reminiscent conflict that Trump slammed Jeb Bush about on the 2016 campaign trail.
On the left, the post-election vote counts will include many “James Carville” Democrats motivated in protest against the pitfalls of DSA association. Will these reactionary Democrats administer a fatal set back to Bernie/AOC bros and gals excited about the prospect of nationwide Mamdani-style governance? The results in the Michigan senate race between El-Sayed and Stevens may not reflect coast-to-coast realities, but the razor-thin tilt casts the Democrat rift in stark relief.
Who and how many are the voters who will surmount the divides and yield the results? Who’ll be sitting pretty and who will be licking wounds on Wednesday, November 4th?
Opposing wings of the political opinion-making class are storming platforms and programs, determined to sway the outcome. The left-leaners and Trump-haters vilify the status of Trump’s war on the mullahs as ill-considered, devoid of a satisfactory exit strategy, even lost. Mixed messaging on the presence or not of Iran’s nuclear capabilities—what we’ve destroyed and what remains—has contributed to skepticism among even some of Trump’s most loyal supporters. Lockstep support for Israel, a foundational precept in U.S. politics, is undergoing some erosion in the MAGA camps over who exactly is running the show, Trump or an Israeli braintrust that has somehow gained influential, self-serving leverage over the President’s decision-making.
In the right-leaning precincts, it’s either criticize, wait and see, or remain hawkish on Iran, pick your pundit. Meanwhile, the conservative media’s full court press against the DSA has gone beyond talking point to tirade. When the voting starts, citizens who aren’t staunchly loyal to their party affiliation will have a lot to consider. For MAGA voters disgruntled about Trump’s foreign policy, what’s worse: America First on the back-burner, or the ever-leftward Democrats? For the left, what’s worse, the Commies or Trump?
