It's not all doom and gloom

Music sales were up 10% in 2008 because of online sales and—wait for it—vinyl. (In completely unrelated news, 95% of music downloads are illegal.)

Oh, hell yeah:

Album sales were not down across all formats. LPs and vinyl albums were up by a whopping 89 percent, but as the saying goes, 89 times zero is still zero. (LPs and vinyl albums accounted for just 1.88 million sales in 2008).

But, here's reality:

Despite record-breaking growth in digital sales of music from sites such as iTunes, the majority of music downloaded in 2008 was done so without payment to either the artist or record label, according to a report by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).
