A Glimpse Into The 1982 Underground

Hi-Fi "9 O'Clock"

Ok, so the Splice Today Office of Music Archeaology just turned in their latest research. They've managed to unearth this rocking early 80s tune from an obscure short-lived collaboration between slightly less obscure musicians. A fantastic song for moving at high speeds.

The following video was included in this article:

Here's the backstory on this bit of 1982 musicology. Hi-Fi was primarily the work of the two singers in this video, Ian Matthews and David Surkamp. Matthews is best know for his 60s work with Fairport Convention and Surkamp fronted the underground proggy group Pavlov's Dog in the 60s. Both were seeking to resurrect their careers with Hi-Fi, but the project never ended up going anywhere.

Discussion
  • Nice video. Ian Matthews, as I've discovered had a minor hit with a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock." Far better, though, was Sandy Denny, whose Fairport Convention vocal on "Tam Lin" is a classic.
