Via A Continuous Lean, a fabulous gem of a series from the LIFE Magazine photo archive: Sherman Billingsley, owner of the immensley posh Stork Club in Manhattan, had a pretty comprehensive set of hand signals for his staff. Pictured, the open-fingered, palm-down left hand meaning "music in the main dining room is too loud."
pretty cool post! but i think the caption got mixed up. the one pictured means the music in the dining room is too loud (so says the linked site). the one that means 'get them out' is with two hands interlocked and one thumb up.
