Carol Burnett: We had a down payment on a house in Beverly Hills, and I was not very in-demand at that time.

Ellie Goulding: Everything around it was beautiful, dressed up real nice.

Burnett: I love that. Exactly. Oh my gosh.

Goulding: [Laughs] I listened to classical music walking through the park every day thinking, “What am I doing?”

Burnett: Well, I think people are going to be what they’re going to be.

Goulding: Meanwhile, my body physically couldn’t function well, and my throat was dead.

Burnett: Oh, wow. And one of the crew members way up high on a girder or whatever had fallen asleep and was snoring.

Goulding: I rely on the purity of that to take away some of my cynicism.

Burnett: But our instinct was to get closer to the audience for the finish, so we did it again.

Goulding: It feels detached from reality, in a good way.

Burnett: I’ve told this story, but I think it bears repeating. It just depends on who’s saying it.

Goulding: I always remember this one conversation.

Burnett: And they had to put us on the air.

Goulding: I started getting panic attacks, to the point where I couldn’t leave the house.

Burnett: We all do.
