Like Helping the Environment, Without the Work!

TXU Energy, a privately-owned energy firm in Texas, recently planted 100 whole trees on the UT-Arlington campus as "part of the go-green initiative of the company." TXU's website doesn't show any plans for increased solar- or wind-powered initiatives, but hey, who doesn't like a hundred fresh trees? On a scale of 90-100, where do you rate the level of corporate pandering on display?

"A Summer Tree" by McPig

The first of one hundred trees that will provide shade in the hot summer months and give the campus a greener look was planted Tuesday afternoon.

One hundred trees were donated to the university through the School of Social Work by TXU Energy as part of the company’s environmental initiatives. The tree was planted south of the Science Hall in a ceremony that included President James Spaniolo, Sen. Chris Harris and Rep. Diane Patrick-District 94.

“It is positive for UTA and TXU,” said Donna Pope, School of Social Work advancement coordinator. “It is an example of public and private sector partnership, and it fits UTA’s sustainability image.”

  • Oh, please. No more corporate pandering than any of the presidential candidates, including The Messiah.

  • I hate that people are still brainwashed into thinking that we somehow have a "shortage" of trees, and that we need to plant as many trees as possible because the "trees are vanishing." This was some pathetic late 80's political maneuvering that has somehow overstayed it's welcome. Trees are a cash crop that can be grown quickly and bring in a butt-load of money. We're not running out.

  • And think about all the trees that'll be saved as newspapers print less pages.

  • Wow. Look at all the tree haters we have here. Is it possible, folks, that you can set your cynicism aside and admit that, although it may be corporate pandering, planting 100 trees in Texas is undeniably a positive thing for the environment? Just look at all the good trees do! http://www.arborday.org/trees/benefits.cfm
