Independent vs. Dependent Student Media

There's a pretty significant dust-up going on over at Quinnipiac University in which the administration is taking up arms against the Quad News, a student news outlet unaffiliated with the university, that officials claim is undermining the university-dependent Quinnipiac Chronicle.

“Apparently these students want to be independent of the University when it involves student organizational rules and responsibilities, but they want to be part of the University when it comes to having access to University resources and the privileges of being a recognized student organization,” Bushnell wrote in the 870-word memo.

“Unfortunately, in the real world, responsibility and playing by the rules go hand in hand with the privileges of membership.”

Discussion
  • Wow, when I worked at a student-run university newspaper, the administration basically left us alone. It's a little scary when the object of the story (the U) can manipulate the purveyor of the story.
