Sydney Pollack 1934-2008

The director of The Way We Were, Out of Africa, Tootsie, and They Shoot Horses, Don't They? was also a celebrated actor and producer. Most impressively, Pollack makes the following prediction about the then-new cable industry's effect on moviemaking: "I worry about films...I think all films eventually will just have to be spectacle films, or special event films, and cable will just take over all the rest." His movies were justly celebrated for Pollack's concentration on human relationships and emotion.

Discussion
  • You can keep "Out of Africa" but the restaurant scene in "Tootsie" was brilliant, as was the whole movie, as was, sappiness aside, "The Way We Were."
