Pt. 1: The Atari Era.

When video games evolved to accommodate replaceable programmable cartridges in the late 1970s, the business side of the industry was forced to grow up and compete as the stakes began to rise. No longer were video games simply rebranded Pong consoles, but platforms and brands that could support long-term sales and licensing opportunities. Although not the first video game console, the Atari VCS, released in 1977, essentially created a new niche market that Atari controlled for almost three years.
