Dictators in context

Death by Stalin? 5 million. Smoking? 53 million. Another one here.

  • Very ballsy ads. Where's Mao? And what about Truman for Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Shock value aside, though, smoking (and alcohol and fatty foods) is a choice one consciously makes. Death by dictator or political leader is obviously something entirely different.

  • Great advertising and very effective. It's too bad you don't see ads like this hardly every in magazines or online or on the tube. Stalin and Hitler gets your attention and you think. Most "message" advertising is timid (although the anti-steroid one run on ESPN and Fox during baseball games with a guy's nuts shriveling into raisins was excellent) in the U.S. This kind of advertising is normal in the UK and Germany.

  • You know a conversation has devolved when Hitler and Stalin get thrown around in comparisons. When the participants want to drag out debate by referencing the extremes. It's just as true in advertising.
